Community Engagement: South Texas
The graduate programs in Urban and Regional Planning and the Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research support UTSA’s community engagement strategic initiative. Students work on actual projects in South Texas and interact with city administrators and citizens. The Urban and Regional Planning Program and Research Center bring together students, staff, and faculty from within the University of Texas at San Antonio to address community planning, economic, infrastructure, environmental, housing and development issues impacting Texas and the border region.
Texas has entered a period of unprecedented change. This change process is being driven by a number of converging trends including rapid urban growth, increasing environmental stress, an increasingly obsolescent infrastructure base, changing land use patterns, and a growing housing problem, especially in the region's rural areas. To gain a better understanding of these trends and forces, and their impact on the future of Texas and the border region, the Urban and Regional Planning Program brings together resources, talent, and assets of the University to address these issues.
