Centro to host UTSA architecture studio pop-up on Houston Street
(March 14, 2018) -- Centro San Antonio (Centro), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, have partnered together for a unique Activate Houston Street service-learning opportunity to utilize the rich architecture of the thoroughfare as an experimental and educational lab.
“Houston Street and its environs offer an ideal living laboratory for the work of our UTSA architecture and urban design students,” said Michael Guarino, UTSA Adjunct Professor. UTSA students will activate the Majestic retail space located on 212 E Houston Street, Suite 600 beginning on Monday, March 19 to Friday, March 23 (MWF 1pm – 5pm). UTSA students will display their work and will open their doors to welcome the community to review and provide feedback on their concepts.
Activate Houston Street is an initiative from Centro tasked with the goal of creating a placemaking action plan for the Houston Street corridor. The plan includes stakeholder and community feedback gathered through a series of workshops held in early November 2017 and a Community Charrette in January 2018. The Community Charrette Executive Summary produced by the American Institute for Architects will be released later this month.
UTSA graduate students served as scribes at the community charrette held in January and have been analyzing the comments as well as additional data collected on Houston Street to further develop bold ideas. The college describes the Majestic retail space activation as “a pop-up architecture studio researching the history and conditions of Houston Street to assist Centro in activating its potential.”
“Houston Street is an attractive opportunity for educational pilot partnerships in downtown,” said Maria Nelson, Manager of Urban Planning at Centro. “The contribution the students are giving downtown through their work reinforces the importance of developing an environment where people want to work and play.”
