Hurricane Harvey Rebuild Project

Hurricane Harvey Rebuild Project

(October 17, 2017) -- Through a collaborative effort from our student organizations and outside sponsors, UTSA construction students were able to help a family recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. While exercising community leadership and stewardship, UTSA students acquired all needed roofing materials through donations. Sponsors for this community service project include GSABA, Bondoc Roofing, Beldon Roofing, Kiewit Offshore Services, TAMKO Building Products, the UTSA Student Government Association, and IBTX. This project would not have been possible without the help and support from our sponsors.

Required scope of work for the weekend included replacing all fascia board, repair/replacement of decking, removing previous roofing materials, and installation of a moisture barrier. The project began the weekend of October 7th with students showing up bright and early to demo the existing roofing materials. By the end of the weekend, all of this was accomplished and ready for inspection.

Students were able to gain valuable hands-on experience while being led by construction industry professionals. Not only were our volunteers able to learn new skills and knowledge, but they also took the opportunity to directly impact lives of others through their efforts. This experience provided a sense of community and leadership that we will continue to use in future projects to inspire others around us. Another update will follow with the completion of the project.
