(November 30, 2017) -- After evaluating 60 entries from local architecture firms, the American Institute of Architects San Antonio chapter honored winners of the 2017 AIA San Antonio Design Awards at a November 29 People + Place Celebration. While the traditional Place Awards celebrate design excellence and help increase public awareness of the importance of architecture in everyday life, the new People Awards celebrate professional achievement and community leadership. UTSA lecturer Candid Rogers of the CACP was honored with the following two design awards at the celebration.

Citation Award: Utopia cabin

Located on a rural site adjacent to the Sabinal River, the cabin serves as a family retreat for recreation and connecting with nature.

Juror comment: “Aggressively sustainable – a solid hill-country cabin with terrific siting with sensitive, aesthetic regionalism.”

Honorable Mention: House 117

Organized around a southeast-facing courtyard, the exterior living room works to channel the summer breezes through the shaded hammock room while offering connection to the pool and the sports court at the rear.

Juror comment: “A celebration of materiality that is executed and nailed just right. A really unique project amongst the residential field notable for its exceptional interiors.”

UTSA undergraduate architecture student Donovan Linsey, Assoc. AIA, was also honored with a special award at the celebration. A Presidential Citation was awarded to him “in recognition of his leadership and advocacy on behalf of AIA among his peers at UTSA; for his steadfast collaboration in the planning and execution of the 2016 Texas Society of Architects 76th Annual Convention and Expo; and for his dedication and commitment to the mission of AIA San Antonio.”
