Stephen Temple is Associate Professor and the Coordinator of the Basic Design Sequence, where “making” is established as foundational design experience the for the first two years of the curriculum including Architecture, Interiors, and Construction Science students in the College of Architecture, University of Texas at San Antonio. His research interests include architectural and design theory; design process research, psychology of learning, philosophy of perception, visual perception, phenomenology, beginning design education, digital media integration; design/build; photography; woodworking; furniture design and furniture making. Current research concerns phenomenological inquiries into visual perception, the body, and architectural design, and their subsequent relation to the development of beginning design pedagogy.

Professor Temple holds a Master of Science in Architecture from the University Texas at Austin and has completed courses in psychology and philosophy. Prior to joining UTSA, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at Drury University and an Assistant Professor and Lecturer in the Department of Interior Architecture at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He is a registered architect  and has worked for 12 years with professional design firms in Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. He currently runs his own architecture practice in Texas.

Professor Temple is the author of over 25 scholarly and creative works, including 23 refereed works in the last 13 years. He has delivered over a dozen invited lectures and an equal number of technical presentations both nationally and internationally. His book on beginning design education, “Design through Making” has been published in 2007. His work has been published in the Proceedings of the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student, The Design Communication Association, the Senses and Society Journal, and the Industrial Designers Society of America National Education Council.  Professor Temple was director of the 2005 Conference on the Beginning Design Student and currently sits on its advisory board. He was  keynote speaker at a Special Session on Beginning Design in 2006 ACSA National Conference and has led paper sessions at the 19th, 20th, 22nd, and 23rd National Conference on the Beginning Design Student. He is listed in Who’s Who among Educators 2007-08 and in 2006, was the recipient of a Distinguished Achievement in Higher Education award from Texas Legislator Van de Putte.
