Nikos Salingaros is on the forefront of developing new architectural theories incorporating adaptive design, biophilia, design complexity, neuro-design, and patterns. He has supervised and acted as external examiner for more than 20 Master’s and Doctorate students in Architecture and Urbanism at prestigious universities around the world. He is on the faculty of the Building Beauty Post-Graduate Diploma in Architecture, and has taught Architecture and Urban Design at the Technical University of Delft, Holland, the University of Rome III, Italy, and the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Querétaro, Mexico.

Professor Salingaros holds a B.Sc. degree from the University of Miami, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Stony Brook University in New York. He is a long-time collaborator of Christopher Alexander. Salingaros was awarded the 2019 Stockholm Cultural Award for Architecture, and shared the 2018 Traditional Building Magazine’s Clem Labine Award with Michael Mehaffy. He was appointed by President Donald Trump to the President’s Council on Improving Federal Civic Architecture, later re-constituted as the non-partisan American Committee on Federal Architecture.

Professor Salingaros’ numerous publications include eight books on architecture and urbanism translated into several languages: Algorithmic Sustainable Design: Twelve Lectures on Architecture (2010), A New Pattern Language for Growing Regions: Places, Networks, Processes, co-authored with Michael W. Mehaffy and others (2020), Anti-Architecture and Deconstruction (2004), A Theory of Architecture (2006), Design for a Living Planet, co-authored with Michael W. Mehaffy (2015), Principles of Urban Structure (2005), Socially-organized housing: a new approach to urban structure, co-authored with David Brain, Andrés M. Duany, Michael W. Mehaffy & Ernesto Philibert-Petit (2006, 2019), Unified Architectural Theory: Form, Language, Complexity (2013).

He is the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Grant (1997-2001), and was an Onassis Foundation Senior Visiting Scholar in the University Seminars Program (2013). Salingaros is on the Scientific Committee of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Barcelona, Spain, and is a member of the International College of Traditional Practitioners, International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism (INTBAU), London.
