Courses

Summary of Year Levels

Foundation Courses: a Common 28 hours for all pre-majors with focus on design fundamentals and visual communications, introduction to the built environment, construction  materials and processes, and  relevant core curriculum courses.

1st Year Gallery

Second Year: For students who are allowed to proceed through the gateway to become majors in either discipline, the second year courses introduce topics in site analysis and design, programming, space planning, 3-dimensional development, building code and accessibility criteria, manual and digital visualization, structural concepts, interior materials and assemblies, architecture and design history.

2nd Year Gallery

Third Year: Junior level courses are conceived to introduce professional practice topics where the focus is on more complexity in the design process. Mixed use project types with complex programming and larger scaled projects are typical studio offerings. Space planning, theoretical topics, building technology, environmental systems, lighting, acoustics, detailing of interior elements, and regulatory requirements are topic areas taught in the third year.

3rd Year Gallery

Fourth Year: In the senior year, students are exposed to ‘professional’ topics. Studios are focused on integrating a broad range of theoretical, programmatic, technical topics in addition to marketing, contractual and other business criteria. Often these projects shadow the work of local professionals or are themselves real projects where students interact with clients, contractors, and collaborators, all of whom provide valuable feedback regarding design and construction processes, business, and management issues. Research methods and application of research in design projects is the focus of the capstone studio in which individual projects reflect the culmination of the four-year educational journey.
