Student Organizations
ABC Overview
The ABC Student Chapter Program is a dynamic network of more than 30 colleges and universities offering construction-related degree programs nationwide. At the local level, student chapters facilitate the interaction of ABC member firms, construction faculty and college students through a variety of industry association and school events, including regular membership meetings, guest speakers, internships, community service projects, fundraisers, career fairs/career awareness events, job site tours, and other activities.
Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national construction industry trade association representing more than 21,000 members. Founded on the merit shop philosophy, ABC and its 70 chapters help members develop people, win work and deliver that work safely, ethically and profitably for the betterment of the communities in which ABC and its members work. ABC's membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is comprised primarily of firms that perform work in the industrial and commercial sectors. ABC's objective is to deal with issues on an industry-wide basis through its national office and chapters.
AGC Overview
The AGC (Associated General Contractors of America) Student Chapter at UTSA is an organization that provides an opportunity for students to be introduced to the construction community in San Antonio. The AGC Student Chapter is run by students here at UTSA and is connected to the AGC Professional Chapter through an AGC liaison who assists in coordinating events and sponsorships for our chapter. Students will have the chance to make contact and build relationships with AGC involved contractors in the area through networking events, AGC annual events, and community outreach events. In addition, AGC Student Chapter members will have the chance to participate in Construction Leadership Council (CLC) events, a subchapter of the AGC, that promotes the education and training of construction professionals.
NAHB Overview
The National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) Student Chapters program is dedicated to enriching the educational experience of students by offering them first-hand exposure to the real world of the building industry through NAHB membership, educational programming, and networking opportunities. Working with a faculty adviser and drawing on the mentors and industry leaders in their local home builders association, student chapters can compete in national competitions, win scholarships, enjoy discounts on trade shows, and enjoy all the benefits of membership in NAHB. The NAHB Student Chapter at UTSA is a professional student organization focused on the residential sector of the construction industry. Our local partner chapter of the NAHB is the Greater San Antonio Builders Association (GSABA).
TPWA Overview
The TPWA (Texas Public Works Association) student chapter is a professional organization focused on the public works sector of the construction industry. This organization gives students an opportunity to explore projects and potential career paths in public works. TPWA offers students a chance to build relationships with public entities as well as the private construction and engineering corporations that work with them. The TPWA Student Chapter at UTSA works closely with the professional chapter to organize events and opportunities for networking, socializing and volunteering. In addition, students are given the opportunity to attend project site visits to familiarize themselves with different types of public work projects.
Why should I join?
Membership comes with a wide range of opportunities from networking with industry leaders, meeting new students in the program at social events and access to internships and job opportunities. The folks at ABC, AGC, GSABA, and TPWA are excited to be our partners and are committed to enriching the educational experience and career outlook of student members through sponsored events, scholarships, job fairs and more.
Need more reasons to join up? How about:
- Guest speakers at meetings
- Involvement looks great on resumes
- Free food
- Job site visits
- Mentorship
- Access to many internship and career opportunities that are not posted or available at job fairs (many people get their jobs through networking and not a formal job search)
- Fun events like membership mixers, tailgating, the annual chili cook-off and more
- Volunteer opportunities doing good work for the community and our industry
